This is a sliding lid box I made from reclaimed / salvaged wood. Well, the box frame is made from reclaimed wood but the top and bottom are 1/4 plywood which are set into 1/4″ grooves.
I like using mitered corners for this type of box because you don’t need to worry about starting and stopping the grooves short of the end of the boards. Any other joint, whether its a box joint, rabbet joint, butt joint would require at least two of the sides have grooves that do not reach the end or they would be visible on the outside of the box. I can run mitered sides through on my table saw.
I reinforced the mitered corners with splines to ensure the joints would remain solid and intact, (I also like the look of them).
The image on the top of the box shows a historic scene from Nelson B.C.,s Baker St. taken in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. I did some research and it’s my understanding that any photographs taken before 1923 are in the public domain and are copyright free. I was still “uneasy” about using it but said WTH!!
If anyone is interested in one of these boxes or something similar, please contact me and we can discuss options for sizing and aesthetics.
